Best Quote from last Gathering: Well I don’t have a best quote from the last gathering. Here’s one I found on the internet from John Stewart.

“Thou shall not kill. Thou shall not commit adultery. Don't eat pork. I'm sorry, what was that last one?? Don't eat pork. God has spoken. Is that the word of God or is that pigs trying to outsmart everybody?” - Jon Stewart

Thursday (11/10, 7-9pm)Satan's Critique of Church-State Separation by Clark Moeller. Oceanfront Library, 700 Virginia Beach Blvd.

What would the Prince of Darkness have to say about the Constitutional Principle of separation between religion and government? What might His Supreme Wickedness think about billions of tax dollars channeled without oversight to faith-based groups, and current efforts to spirit vouchers through Congress beneath Katrina’s petticoats? Clark Moeller has some devilish ideas about what the Dark Prince is cookin’ up. He’ll present his appraisal in a dramatic reading of his work “Satan’s Critique of Church-State Separation” at the Oceanfront Library on Thursday, November 10th from 7-9pm. The event is free, but seating is limited. RSVP now!

Clark Moeller hails from Pennsylvania where the latest attack on Evolution is being fought in Kitzmiller et. al. v. Dover Area School District. He is on the board of directors of the ACLU of Pennsylvania, which is helping to represent plaintiffs in the case. Mr. Moeller himself is the plaintiff in Moeller v. Bradford County, which is believed to be one of the first to challenge federally funded religious discrimination in a faith-based program. He is also author of Church-State Separation: A Keystone to Peace (3rd edition)

Friday (11/11) - Atheists in Foxholes is a rally and march planned for the Mall in Washington, DC on Veteran’s Day to acknowledge and honor Atheists in Foxholes. A group of us will depart Hampton Roads by mini-van in the wee hours on Friday and arrive on the Mall in DC in time for the march at 11am. We’ll listen to speakers for a couple of hours then depart before 2pm. We expect to arrive back in Hampton Roads before 7pm. Get in touch if you’d like to come along and help honor those who have served our country but who have been ill-served by a recurring cliché.

Saturday (11/12) – Game Night is a regular event with the Tidewater Atheists Group. Bring your favorite game and nosh-ables and be prepared to show off your expertise with words, trivia, and pantomime; or just munch, slurp, and chortle your way through the evening. Contact Michele

December

SOLSTICE PARTY – Tentatively scheduled for Saturday, December 17th, 2005. The location will likely be a local dining establishment, but it might be in someone’s home. Watch your email, check the web sites, or call someone up if you don’t hear something soon.

Text Box: Friday (10/14) – 6pm til 8:30pm –WE HAVE A SPEAKER. And it’s a good one: Ellery Schempp. Working through the Separation of Church and State Meetup Group (HRSepCnS), we’ve arranged for Mr. Schempp to visit our area and speak about the Importance of Church-State Separation. He was the successful plaintiff in a Supreme Court case way back in 1963 known as Abington School District vs. Schempp. It’s at the Unitarian Church in Norfolk (beside the Chrysler Museum). Ellery begins speaking at 7pm. Q&A will follow. Read more below.

Folks, we need your support on this one! Please attend. It’s FREE! (Contributions encouraged). There will be light munchies. And you get to rub shoulders with a freethinker who speaks regularly on the subject of separation, but whose life is interesting aside from all that.

We’re crossing another threshold. Our groups have steadily grown more numerous and diverse. Now the ticklish task of arranging for speakers is finally coming to pass. Together we can make it a rousing success.
Last Month

October was a busy month. Really! There was so much going on that I can’t begin to write summaries for it all. Of course, there were the regular Meetups. However, if you weren’t tuned in to FAVA or TAG you missed out on Game Night (TAG), Dinner and a Movie at Cinema Café at Greenbrier (FAVA), Einstein and Beyond (SRHR), Penny Ante Poker night, A talk by Ellery Schempp (HRSepCnS), and a pre-Halloween outing to Busch Gardens. Oh! And Matt Edwards (aka AtheiStar) converted to Evangelical Christianity.

Special Note

On October 14th I had the honor of introducing Ellery Schempp as the first speaker enticed to our area by the Hampton Roads Separation of Church and State Group. Mr. Schempp dazzled the small audience with his views on Separation and on a few topics in physics, in which he holds a PhD. He fielded a slew of questions with grace and eloquence.

The only downside was attendance. Despite ads in newspapers, fliers posted about town, email entreaties to various groups and organizations interested in Church-State issues (including Regent University), we only had a couple of dozen in the audience, which appeared even smaller in the spacious sanctuary of the Unitarian Church. I can only chalk it up to our inexperience with getting the word out in the right way to the right people at the right time. All-in-all thought, the glass ended up a bit more than half-full.

So what’s next? Well like Atheists everywhere, I will not shrink from this challenge. I’m crawling right back into that foxhole and I’m breaking out the big guns. That’s right. SATAN IS COMING TO TOWN!
